WingTsun Kung Fu FAQ
January 3, 2013
Why is it spelled Ving Tsun, Wing Tjun, Wing Tchun, Wing Chun, WingChun, Wing Tsun, etc?
In Chinese, the pronunciation is the same regardless of the Western spelling. Back when Si-Jo Leung Ting started to promote Wing Tsun Kung Fu as a system of martial arts to the Western world, he changed the spelling to distinguish his type of Wing Tsun Kung Fu from other lineages, learned from Ip Man.
The reason for most of the various spellings has to do with politics.
Do I need to have prior knowledge of martial arts?
Not at all. There are many people from other styles of martial arts practicing WingTsun Kung Fu, some of whom are high ranking instructors, and others who are new to martial arts in general. Students of all levels are welcome in WingTsun Kung Fu. You will discover it is a very real and effective system of martial arts for self defense.
What should I wear for my intro class?
Wear clothing that is modest and comfortable to work out in. Sweat pants and a t-shirt are fine. Please do not wear black shirts as this is the color reserved for assistant instructors and above.
Please remove all rings, necklaces, and bracelets to avoid injuries or broken and lost jewelry.
What does "Diligentia in Progressio" mean?
It has several meanings. Some literal, some more subtle. The basic meaning is diligence in forward motion. In Wing Tsun Kung Fu, we want to always be physically moving forward. Symbolically, it means to pay attention/be diligent about your forward progression in all things you do.
